I also think that being in a state of ‘hungoverness’ is not black and white, it’s somewhere on a spectrum. If you’ve drunk alcohol, you are always somewhere along the spectrum of being hungover, it’s just that sometimes the symptoms are more manageable than at other times. A full blown hangover is actually alcohol poisoning.
This means that regular drinkers often suffer a low level of discomfort, anxiety and depression, which is only relieved by drinking. This gives the illusion that alcohol causes comfort, relaxation and happiness. It doesn’t – it’s only relieving the awful symptoms that it caused in the first place.
