Natural Alzheimer's Prevention Steps

Alzheimer's disease has featured heavily in the news this week, and so I thought I'd write about some natural prevention protocols.

A study a while back showed that high doses of B vitamins greatly reduced brain shrinkage and memory loss in those at risk of Alzheimer's.  This is due to the effect the B vitamins have on lowering a substance called homocysteine in the body.  
High homocysteine levels are a key predictor of risk for Alzheimer's; blood tests are available and if your level is higher than 10mcmol/l you take steps to lower it.  A nutritional therapist will be able to devise a full programme for you, but a good place to start is by taking Nutrigold's Homocysteine Support Formula.  

A healthy diet is important to keep the brain healthy too.  In particular, omega 3 fatty acids from oily fish, nuts and seeds are beneficial.  Producing less insulin, by eating less refined sugar, is also beneficial for preserving memory; avoiding refined carbohydrates and following the principles of a low GL diet will help.
